With proficiency in Photoshop, Quark, & Illustrator (and a Wacom tablet), Powerpoint, Word, as well as training in Frontpage and Dreamweaver, and an emerging knowledge of Maya and Flash, among other computer design programs, I also have knowledge of photography, as well as Photostat cameras and platemakers, withdarkroom and press experience. I have considerable job experience in all stages of typography, layout design and illustration, as well as book preparation from the board to the press. I have work experience as an editor, art director, writer and painter in a variety of mediums including watercolor, pastels, oils, acrylic, gouache and digital.

 

I currently teach as an Adjunct Professor for the Communication Arts Department in the School of the Arts at VCU, Virginia Commonwealth University, in Richmond, VA, as I pursue my Ph.D.

 

The Interdisciplinary Ph.D Degree in Media, Art & Text that I currently pursue investigates multiple media including publishing, literature, art, film, theater, advertising, and the emerging areas of hypertext in its variety of hybrid forms—practical study in how to use them, how they interact with one another, as well as their history and potential effects on society.   During this program, my personal focus has been on the impact of new media on Children’s Literature and Narrative in its various forms, particularly the picture book form, as well as on the Narrative and Design/Illustration fields.

 

In 2002 I received my Masters Degree in Children's Literature from Hollins University.

 

I have extensive critical, professional and historical knowledge of the Children’s Book field, its history & criticism, notables, current and emerging trends, processes, awards, societies, issues/debates, etc.  I have acquired a considerable children’s book collection.  I have knowledge of fiction and informational books, YA novels, children’s films, animation, and theatre, science fiction and fantasy.
